SOP Coach: seven instant checks today, a line-by-line AI review in beta
A weak statement of purpose sinks good profiles. SOP Coach lives in the student portal under SOP review. It gives feedback in two layers.
Layer one: instant checks
These run on our server the moment a draft is submitted. No model is involved.
- Length against the 500–1,000 words most universities expect.
- Paragraphs: four to six reads well; one block of text does not.
- Sentence length, flagging sentences longer than 35 words.
- Clichés such as “since my childhood” and “prestigious university”, from a list of twenty that admissions officers see most.
- Specifics: results, dates and numbers that back up claims.
- Sentences that start with “I”, when it is more than 45% of them.
- Program named: whether the draft says what the student is applying for.
Layer two: the AI review (beta)
The model scores seven criteria from 1 to 5: clarity, structure, motivation, academic fit, career goals, specificity and language. For each issue it quotes the exact words from the draft, explains the problem and suggests a fix, with at most one example sentence. It never rewrites a paragraph. The statement stays the student’s own.
Students can send up to five drafts a day. A draft is visible only to the student and their counselor, and a counselor can add notes on top of the AI review.
